4 Tips for On-Camera Confidence for Entrepreneurs

on-camera coaching

There’s a lot of information about the importance of building a personal brand but not a lot of guidance on exactly how to do that. Using video for your personal brand is the digital marketing of the present and future. It’s not about popularity, it’s about connection, expertise and value.

Using short form video in your personal brand digital marketing positions you as the go-to expert in your industry. Not only does video utilize more of our senses it also persuades, informs and entertains. It is a more interactive form of media that engages more people to react, share and take action than other formats. When you leverage video content you are increasing your connection, elevating your messaging and driving more sales.

But here’s the thing. You dread showing up on camera. If you had a choice between a pet spider and giving a video presentation on Zoom, you would choose Stanley the spider. But in this digital age, you have to show up on camera.

You cannot afford for your business to get lost in a sea of stock photos and logos. You’re trying to be a stand out brand.

So, here are 4 quick tips to boost your on-camera confidence.

  1. Talk to a room of 1

To avoid sounding like the robot version of yourself, you want to speak as if you are speaking to a room of one. This will not only help you relax but also help you have a more natural delivery. With a natural delivery,  your audience will warm up to you and feel comfortable engaging with you. It provides a personal touch that video can do better than other forms of media.

  1. Remember your face

Do you know that nonverbal communication is the primary form of expression and communication, across the world? If you have a look of displeasure that will be communicated and magnified even more so via video. For instance, when you are creating a welcome video for a course you started, you want to make sure your facial expressions match your message. This does not mean you have to turn into an Oscar nominated actor but it does mean you should be mindful that your facial expressions communicate heavily and even guide the tone for both your message and for your audience.

  1. Do not, do not memorize a script

Do not, do not memorize a script. Or worse, read a script. Why? Delivery and tone takes a lot of practice. Even if you had a teleprompter, it takes a lot of practice. And I’m going to guess you want to be authentic, you want to feel like you and you want to genuinely connect and attract the right type of audience for your videos and thus, your business. The best way to do this right away is to be conversational. When you deliver your content in a conversational tone you break down this formal, invisible wall in video. Better yet, you can be anxiety-free from trying to remember your next line while stiffly smiling and delivering your current line.

  1. Focus on what’s in it for them

We have a lot of distractions these days, so people want to understand clearly and upfront what’s in it for them. What can you provide, suggest, teach, offer, etc., your audience? When you focus more on your audience and less about diving deep into highlighting yourself, the ears of your audience will be fully yours. There are exceptions to this rule but overall, focus more on your audience. It needs to be clear how you can help them or what you will provide them with. What this does is also turn your audience into being your loudest megaphone and spreading the word about how you can help. That good ol’ fashioned word-of-mouth. Nothing like it. What focusing on your audience also does is take the pressure off of you to “perform”. You get to focus more on the gift you provide to others and that will make the video making process more enjoyable for you which in turn, translates via video to your audience and boosts your camera confidence.

We’re just scratching the surface here. If you’re serious about leveling up and getting camera-confident in front of the camera for your business, then you’re ready for on-camera coaching. It’s important you align yourself with a coach you are comfortable with, that is going to work with you on developing your content as well as developing your confidence and who is not simply going to send you a couple of videos to watch.
